My Policy Regarding fees and Retainers
I believe that it is important that my client understand the quality of our work, part of which includes the methods I use to charge for our service. We ask that you take a moment to read this short statement. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask us.
We will provide you with well trained and experienced legal counsel, competent secretarial services, modern equipment, research facilities. We will give your problems our continuing personal attention to attain the maximum result possible in the most reasonable time.
Generally we base our fees on our skill, our years of experience and time.
We base the charges for most initial consultations on the time spent with you. After this initial consultation we will discuss with you a fee arrangement, all arrangements necessary to carry out your case, including a fee arrangement and receipt of your instructions before proceeding.
On some matters we can quote you a mixed fee, for example, drafting of routine deeds, Wills, or the set up of a simple corporation. In some cases, there is legislation or a court fixes our fees, as in Probate and Guardianship. In some cases, as in a court action, it may be difficult to fix a fee. In these cases the best we can do is to set a high and a low.
Part of our job is to ensure that you understand the risk involved in any litigation, which includes the legal fees you must pay, win or lose.
We may request a reasonable retainer fee. The retainer fee is in the nature of a deposit that we use to pay out of pocket expenses and our fees. Most of our clients prefer to handle their business and legal matters on a pay-as-you-go basis. Thus we will bill you an any regular basis for our services and expenditures as you may prefer.
Our account to you will give you a full description of the work done on your behalf and will show our out of pocket expenses as disbursements. Please note that we charge a $40.00 Internet Access Fee for unlimited internet access and for Property Online access.
Please feel free to discuss with us our fees, the progress of your case, and the details of any bill. We try to do what is proper and fair. We base our relationship with you on mutual confidence and respect. It is on this basis that we have established our reputation for enduring relationships with our clients.
I am a sole practitioner and I can not afford high overhead or extend credit. Please keep your retainer up to date. All payments must be by cash and/or cheque. Sorry I am unable to provide credit card or debit card services at this time.
